A community resource for exploring, understanding, and advocating for Sheffield's urban forest — built by an arboriculturist, for the city.
This website was created and is maintained by Andy Greenwood, an arboriculturist working at Streets Ahead. It was built in response to community requests for an updated version of the now-mothballed Sheffield Tree Map project.
Sheffield has one of the most celebrated urban forests in the UK. This site aims to make that data transparent, useful, and accessible to residents, tree wardens, researchers, and anyone who cares about the city's canopy.
The map displays the location and approximate measurements for all street trees captured under Streets Ahead. Each marker is colour-coded by genus, and clicking any tree opens a detail panel with species, age, girth, height, crown spread, and planting year.
The analytics section provides a breakdown of street trees by species, genus, and family — for the whole city or filtered to individual electoral wards. Planting seasons represent trees planted during the Streets Ahead contract period (October 1st – March 31st each year).
The equity map uses the UK Tree Equity Score methodology developed by the Woodland Trust in partnership with American Forests. Scores are calculated at LSOA level and incorporate canopy cover, air quality, deprivation, and population data.
Clicking any neighbourhood reveals its current canopy coverage against its target, estimated trees needed to close the gap, and local air quality indicators (NO₂ and PM2.5).
